ETHER FESTIVAL - Friday Tonic sessions

"Extraordinary producer of high intensity avant electronics, Warp Records' Tim Exile collaborates with pianist Sarah Nicolls and jazz saxophonist and composer Jason Yarde in this specially created new project."

This is something I've been looking forward to for a while, Sarah Nicolls on her new invention: the newly invented 'piano'.I must admit I don't know much about Tim Exile, but what I've heard is good, like most things WARP endorses, somehow his solo material seems to mix of quite mainstream electronic dance music, noise, and obscurity with a kind of 'Depech Mode' bleakness. Jason Yarde, on the other hand seems more in the vain of Rashid Roland Kirk, or even Coltrane, but more straight than either (at least what I can find), reminds me a bit of Jazz Jamaica, without the extensive instrumentation. But with this mixture I think it'll be a very interesting evening, and it's FREE!

'the front room'. Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre.

"A brand new collaboration with WARP's newest signing, Tim Exile. The first appearance of Sarah's newly invented upright, mechanicalised piano in London - come and wonder at the little ticking motors, the magic Wii wheel and the virtuosity of Mr Exile.

you me bum bum train

Having been very busy recently baking mince pies and then washing them down with warm mulled wine, I'm very glad that a friend convinced me to take time out to go and see this new and very bizarre piece of theatre.

You Me Bum Bum Train is situated inside the next-gen style gallery Mutate Britain - which showcases new artworks across all media art forms from spray-painted plane pieces to a labrynth of peepo possibilities to "Larry" - a firebreathing cyborg who roams the streets of Shoreditch.

We dutifully queued from 5.30pm, handing over our £15 to get a number written on our hand - I was lucky number 23. The entrance to the "play" was a corner-shop style plastic curtain from which the sounds of pumping 80s/90s house could be heard. "Was this really going to be worth it?" we were all asking ourselves. There was certainly a long queue and only 30 places per showing, so someone must be in on the secret.

I think that this play is the nearest I've come to correctly using the phrase "slapped across the face with a wet fish". The performance makes you, the audience, an individual, totally centre stage. You are intrinsic to the plot, but at the same time your very thoughts, emotions and perceptions are challenged. It's funny, smart and not unlike the little plays you used to put on as a child to an audience of your parents' drunk friends (or was that just me?). You're whisked through each scene in non-stop assault on the senses, thinking, "what now?" and occasionally "help!"... I don't want to say too much and give it away apart from that the last performance is on this Saturday 20th. Turn up early to guarantee entry! Do it do it!
